Times Square Exhibition Center

At Times Square Exhibition Center, Focus Lighting created an exciting, yet flexible lighting design for the entryway and transition spaces of the exhibition hall. Drawing on the aesthetic of the nearby New York Times building and a partnership with Discovery, the lighting accentuates the raw industrial details of this unique space. Original floor tiles, exposed columns, and radical changes in elevations create excitement in this subterranean environment. To contrast the seemingly stark interi [...]

Koi Restaurant

The main challenge for this restaurant was adapting the design concept to the existing space. The client's goal was to make minimal architectural changes to the space. The architect in turn, added elements independent of the space without changing the integral architecture, such as the wooden partitions and the lattice ceiling decoration. Paul Gregory and Michael Cummings of Focus Lighting created simple, yet elegant lighting solutions that enhanced the environment of the space without making ma [...]

Two teakwood beaded screens flank the main entry, dram [...]

100th Anniversary of the Times Square Ball

The theme for the 100th anniversary of the Times Square Ball was “Let There Be Light” so the goal was obvious – to create a sparkling “gem” more colorful, dynamic, and earth-friendly than ever before. The ball’s triangular crystals had to sparkle as much when viewed from 500ft away as they did 10ft away. This was achieved utilizing energy-efficient red, green, blue, and white LEDs with specially designed mirrored baffles and with double facetted crystals - creating incredible sparkle [...]

Chambers Hotel

For the Chambers Hotel, Focus Lighting turned to the art galleries in New York's Tribeca And Chelsea neighborhoods for conceptual inspiration. In addition to providing boutique accommodations for its guests, the hotel is also home to an extensive collection of original art, displayed in the lobby, corridors and guest rooms. To define the art in relation to the space it inhabits, accents were used on each piece to highlight the work's presence on the hotel's wall space. The resulting juxtaposi [...]

Carlton Hotel

The architectural concept was to use imagery of the landmarked building facade throughout the design we were able to call upon the one time grandeur of the existing hotel and revive it's faded elegance. This concept culminates in the water feature where a show happens every 5, 10 or 15 minutes revealing an over sized image of the building exterior facade from the early 1900's (printed on theatrical scrim fabric) behind the textured glass panel. Alternately the image slowly transforms into a f [...]

Le Cirque 2000

Modern, surreal interiors within landmark architecture meld to create Le Cirque 2000. Our goal was to accent the fantastic design while enhancing the beautiful existing structure. As the building's landmark status prohibited any attachment to the existing framework, our solution was to use the new architectural elements as light sources, creating ambient glows and highlights. Numerous examples of these creative techniques for internal illumination can be found throughout the restaurant. The G [...]

Le Cirque 2006

The challenge for this space was to overcome the business-like feel of the chrome and glass architecture by wrapping the restaurant with soft light. Fabric panels over the expansive windows were backlit to create a glowing field around the room. A 50′ diameter internally illuminated lamp-shade chandelier adds flattering light and provides positions to spotlight the tables below. The bar consists of “magic boxes of light” that appear and disappear behind its one-way mirrored façade, an [...]

Rosa Mexicano

In its new Lincoln Center home, Rosa Mexicano has been described as a "Modern hacienda that fuses elements from contemporary and traditional Mexican art and architecture." The most striking element in the restaurant is the two-story water wall in iridescent cobalt blue glass mosaic tile, complete with two hundred miniature white cliff divers pinned off the surface of the wall in neat rows. A two-fold approach was used in lighting the water wall, which is visible through both first and second [...]

Tight beams of blue "moonli [...]

Charles Schwab

The intent of the project was to create a clean bright environment of daytime transactions and a dramatic, identifiable and memorable after-hours experience. This was achieved through the use of ceiling coves and recessed wall coves to hide a dual-color lighting system. T5H0 lams allowed for a (2) color system while still keeping the coves small, while also using the fewest number of fixtures and meeting the required light levels. The marketing program required changing the "light color" of t [...]

I.D. Magazine Awards display

The space is infused with blue light while each of the displays are individually accented with MR 16 framing projectors. The displays appear to float within the sea of blue light. Shuttering the Framing projects tightly on the display eliminates any spill light on the floor which would dispel the illusion.

Shark Exhibit at the New York City Aquarium

The shark exhibit is a wonderful and fascinating addition to the Coney Island Aquarium. The concept behind this design was to showcase the sharks as more than just one of natures greatest predators. It was important to illustrate their lives and educate viewers on their fragile ecosystems. We faced special challenges in devising appropriate methods in tank lighting metal halide flood lights recreated a natural sunlight spectrum, while fiber optics provide uplighting and accenting within the tank [...]

This gave us the best color to reproduce the artist's intent and the control to vary the intensity of the wall with the incoming daylight. The [...]
