Focus Lighting, Inc., a New York City based Architectural Lighting Design firm teamed up with Architect Fredric Schwartz on this modern 2-storey 3,500 square foot residence in New York’s Greenwich Village area. The design team wanted to integrate modern lighting treatments into the clean architectural design of the space to create an open space that felt warm and inviting.
The centerpiece of the space is a glass staircase which is internally illuminated with LED’s. The architects initial concept was to include floating stairs in the space, Focus Lighting designer Ken Ventry took it a step further by integrating 816 Cool White LED’s, creating a glowing chandelier that integrates the bedroom with the first floor.
51 LED’s per stair are embedded in a custom designed track on the glowing glass staircase, creating a glow that fills the entire space with cool blue light. LED’s were chosen because of their energy efficiency and log life, the entire staircase only uses about 122.5 watts (that’s approximately the same as 2 standard household light bulbs).
The living room is flanked on both sides by his and hers offices, each with frosted glass partions that can be opened or closed one section at a time. The partions are lit from a track above with low voltage Xenon lamps, casting a warm glow down the front of each frosted glass panel. Each office features white shelves and are lit with more low voltage Xenon lamps mounted inside the bottom of each shelf, highlighting the items on the shelves below.
The design elements in the space create a one-of-a-kind experience for the home owner. The custom designed fixtures help to create a feeling of originality in the space that makes the owner proud to call the space Home.
