Town Restaurant is located at 15 West 56th Street within the Chambers Hotel (both architecturally designed by the Rockwell Group with lighting design by Focus Lighting). The concept was to simultaneously provide patrons with a series of striking vistas while offering an intimate dining experience. The challenges for the lighting designers included effectively illuminating the environment in an underground space, a tight budget, and the owner’s mandate for simple and inexpensive maintenance.
The first view the client is presented with is the internal glow of the 60′ by 20′ backlit square panels covering the stately two-story wall. These panels seem to float away from the wall, giving a sense of mysterious depth. Custom backlit wood veneer banquets surround patrons by the warm glow of the wood. The next visual element if the crystal beads hanging from the 24-foot high ceiling. The beads are lit from above and below, and are reminiscent of a column of champagne bubbles.
Focus worked to create ambience yet pracitcality in one design. Each lighting effect within the main dining area is a single piece to an intricate puzzle coming together to create a masterpiece.
